A goblin hero menaces a helpless dog.
Sunday dusk, the 1st of Rova, 4707 A.R.
Even with the first wave of raiders defeated, few of the locals were willing to emerge from the nearby buildings to which they’d retreated. Father Zantus continued to tend to the wounded and comfort the fearful.
Aubrey lifted up into the sky to get a better view while the others followed the loudest sounds of combat. The flying gnome spotted two groups fighting and directed Sheriff Hemlock towards the garrison to help the beleaguered guardsmen. The party rushed to the White Deer Inn, where Aldern Foxglove was trapped behind a rain barrel by a goblin mounted atop goblin-dog. Nearby were also six more goblins wielding torches and a warchanter lending support. The heroes arrived at different times, each engaging the enemy in turn.
Goblins wielding fire and fear.
Aubrey watched as a strange mist grew in the boneyard and spread over several graves. As he approached, the mist seemed to slip over the eastern wall at the edge of the boneyard and down along the cliff into the Turandarok river where it dispersed.
When Aldern was freed from behind the rain barrel, he began to fawn over Kivu in thanks for his rescue. When Elshbeth joined the two, Aldern turned some of his attention to her. He also reminded them that they’d also saved Ephrey from the goblins’ cruelty.
Kivu and Elshbeth were invited (with their friends, of course), to a boar hunt to celebrate their victory against the raiders. He then left their company loudly proclaiming them to be the Heroes of Sandpoint!
Heroes of Sandpoint
The raid quickly became a memory filled with as many amusing stories as tales of heroism and tragedy. No one could understand why the goblins had attacked, but few attributed to them the ability to plan such a daring daytime raid.
Sheriff Hemlock treated Aubrey to a drink (of honeyed milk) to thank him for his aide and informed him of another gnome in the town. Excusing himself, Aubrey wasted no time in seeking out this gnome and so made the acquaintance of Veznutt Parooh, a local sage, cartographer and proprietor of the Way North. Veznutt admitted to being the one who’d made the final arrangements for the two gnomes who were murdered during the late unpleasantness. Turns out that Aubrey’s relative had been buried in the forest to the north of town under a white oak after a brief service to Desna. He told Aubrey how to find the burial site, which the gnome did later that evening under cover of darkness.
Moonday, the 2nd of Rova, 4707 A.R.
Unbeknownst to the slumbering townfolk, sometime during the early morning hours a lone guardsman, Pietre, met his end at unknown hands on the beach far below the Old Light. He’d been staked above the high-water mark, seemingly mutilated and then left to die of exposure; all for unknown reasons.
Also, in the dark of the night, one or more grave-robbers were hard at work in the local Boneyard. They exhumed the body of the Ezekien Tobyn, a priest of Desna who’d been killed in a fire during the late unpleasantness five years prior. His remains were seemingly lowered down the cliff-face to a stolen skiff moored in the Turandurok river all for an unknown purpose.
During the day, while he and his newfound friends were being toasted as the Heroes of Sandpoint, Ephrey was approached by Shayliss Vinder. She supposedly needed his help to kill a rat in her basement. She assured him it wasn’t a very large rat, and convinced him to come to her aide. He agreed and left the White Deer Inn, where the party was being celebrated. He returned a short while later, sweating and out of breath, asking the party to swear that he’d been in the Inn all along, and then proceeded to drink quickly to catch up with the quota his friends had already imbibed.
Meeting with the Mayor
Toilday morning, the 3rd of Rova, 4707 A.R.
The party was invited to visit with the Mayor
and arrived on time for their early-morning appointment at the town hall. The Mayor, the Sheriff
, and Father Zantus
were all in attendance. The Sheriff announced that he’d found the missing member of the watch, Pietre, staked, tortured and left to die alone beneath the Old Light.
The Sheriff wanted to go to Magnimar to acquire more men to help in the investigation. He said he would only be gone a few days and would appreciate it if the Heroes would care for the town in his absence. The party agreed, though the question of payment was left unanswered.
Just then Shalelu Andosana arrived. The local scout came to inform the Mayor about what she’d learnt about the local goblins. After thanking the party for their efforts in saving Sandpoint, she shared what little information she had. Evidence seemed to indicate that all five of the local goblin tribes were working together; which was most unusual they were known to war with each other. She’d never heard of even two tribes working together.
One goblin that was kept alive from the raids had told a confusing and odd story, but one that did match mostly with what Shalelu learned in her travels. It seemed that the tribes attributed the planning of the raid to a longshanks (a human); and that it was supposed to be a secret.
The party seemed to have no interest in attending Aldern Foxglove’s boar hunt, but had yet to inform him.
